Francis Marion: The Swamp Fox
In comparison to other famous historical figures of the Revolution, Marion stands out as the prototypical guerrilla leader. Where General George Washington led large conventional armies in the North, Marion operated on a smaller, irregular scale in the South. His success in unconventional warfare earned him accolades as possibly the “Father of Guerrilla Warfare" in America. Indeed, many later American military figures have drawn inspiration from Marion's hit-and-run tactics – from Civil War cavalry raiders to modern special forces who study partisan warfare. Marion's bravery and success in the war secured him a lasting legacy and a deserved place among legends.
